BBQ’S ON THE BALCONY – IS IT OKAY?

SUMMER IS COMING SOON AND SO ARE THE BARBEQUES…

CAN I HAVE A BBQ ON MY BALCONY?

Undoubtedly looking up at the clouds, checking the weather app hoping to put get charcoal and have skewers on the grill. But of course! not all of us have a garden. However, those who are lucky enough to have a garden thumbs up! But those with a balcony on the property may be tempted to just have the BBQ, but there are a few things to consider beforehand. The main question is can I have a BBQ on my balcony?

WHAT IS YOUR BALCONY MADE OF?

First of all, is your balcony made of wood? This is obvious and goes without saying, however, if you’re considering a BBQ on a wooden balcony then you’re in for a potential catastrophe. BBQs create heat and, more likely, fire. Fire plus wood equals more fire.

WHAT DO THE FIRE BRIGADES SAY?

In 2013 there was an article on London Fire Brigade implored people to avoid balcony BBQs. The fire brigades are right to be sceptical of BBQs

IS IT LEGAL?

There is good news, you are permitted to have a BBQ on your balcony if the lease allows it but most leasehold properties do not. The International Fire Code, who operate in The United States of America, states you cannot use charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies (see above) or within 10 feet of combustible construction. So Can I have a BBQ on my balcony?

HOW SHOULD HAVE BBQ, THEN?

If you’re still desperate to have a BBQ on your balcony if building management permit, then it’s advised that you avoid charcoal BBQs and go for electric bbq if possible.

For the most part, it depends on your specific circumstances: the building you’re in, the floor you’re on, the size of your balcony etc. London Fire Brigade is pretty certain you should not be BBQing on balconies but they do have a Fire Safety Team to whom you can direct any questions about staying safe.

BBQs are a lot of fun so we really hope you can get your grill on this summer! But not enough fun to justify the risk of a fire, so just be careful and remember you can never be too safe.
